Hilton hosts top pianist

2008-02-12 00:00

ON Sunday at 3 pm, a new concert series begins in the Memorial Hall at Hilton College. Japanese pianist Kotaro Fukuma will give a performance including Haydn’s Piano Sonata No 24, Schumann’s Carnaval and works by Alexander Scriabin and Toru Takemitsu. The concert will open Fukuma’s national concert tour.

In 2003, at the age of 20, Fukuma came under the international spotlight after not only winning the first prize in the prestigious Cleveland International Piano Competition, but also the Chopin Prize. As a result, he has given nearly 40 concerts in the United States. Since then, his career has blossomed and he has performed at some of the world’s most noted piano music festivals and is a sought-after soloist.

The venue, the Memorial Hall, was originally built to honour the memory of ex-Hiltonians who died during military combat and has recently been converted into a concert hall. Memorable Concerts, a series of four annual concerts featuring acclaimed international musicians is being launched with the Fukuma concert.

Tickets cost R75, and can be booked by phoning 033 383 0126. The ticket price includes complementary tea or coffee, and cake.
