Hilton kids’ camp: fun way to learn about MTB

2011-12-10 00:00

THE second annual Kids Mountain Bike Camp will once again be held in Hilton this year from Tuesday to Thursday for boys and girls aged 10-13 years old. The three days follow a holiday camp format and are not a serious training camp, but rather offer the children the opportunity to learn something about mountain biking and have fun while doing so.

Children will be required to have their own mountain bike, in good working order, and helmet (although arrangements can be made for children needing assistance); all other necessities and daily food will be provided.

The cost is R290 for the three days from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm each day and includes a camp pack for each child. Entry forms can be found and handed in at Cycle Lab Pietermaritzburg (39 Chief Albert Luthili Street). For more information visit www.chriswolhuter.com.

The weekend of December 16-18 is the HAV Hillbilly MTB weekend at Waterhoek Farm, Weston College. Saturday’s activities include fishing, biking (on farm trails), tubing, slip&slide, paintball, archery and music, and on Sunday the MTB events — 55 km Eternal Flame Endurance Ride, 35 km MTB, 20km Intermediate MTB and 10 km Mad Max Fun Ride. Entries close on www.roag.co.za on December 14. Camping is available. No goodie bags will be given out at this event, but instead participants are asked to bring along a goodie bag to give to disadvantaged children in the area.

Old Mutual joBerg2c launches the Team Relay option

The team relay will be perfect for business, mates and families to ride the beloved country. The format:

April 30-May 2 — Sterkfontein Dam to Underberg (includes the FedGroup Berg and Bush Descent)

May 3-5 — Underberg to Scottburgh (sani2c route)

KZN to host UCI MTB

events next year

KwaZulu-Natal will be home to no fewer than four UCI Cross-Country events in February and March next year, leading the way locally by raising the bar to international standard in this form of the sport, which is an Olympic mountain biking discipline.

Serving as a prelude to the opening round of the UCI MTB World Cup to be held at Cascades in Pietermaritzburg on March 17 and 18, the first three of these events, presented by Momentum Health, will be held on courses designed by Nick Floros of KZN, who already designs many of the country’s top marathon and cross-country tracks.

The KZN events will be held at Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park on February 18, Karkloof on March 3 and the Cascades track on March 10. All of these events are within 100 km of each other so visitors wanting to stay would do well to look for accommodation in Pietermaritzburg, which is more or less the central location.

The events will be organised and managed by KZN MTB Commission and all details will be published shortly on their website: www.kznmtb.co.za.
