Hilton lights bill shocker

2010-09-24 00:00

HILTON residents, whose borough falls under uMngeni Municipality, are finding that they too have become targets of Msunduzi Municipality’s relentless fundraising drive.

Some residents have been warned that their electricity will be cut if they don’t pay Msunduzi for their refuse removal.

The problem is that their refuse is and always has been collected by uMngeni Municipality.

Hilton residents pay their rates and refuse removal accounts to uMngeni Municipality, their water bills to the uMgungundlovu District Municipality and electricity charges to Msunduzi.

Resident Chris Naidoo said he was surprised when he opened his latest electricity account to find a charge for refuse. He phoned the Msunduzi Municipality to rectify the mistake. His consternation turned to anger when the clerk on the other end of the line refused to listen to him and insisted that he pay up on the refuse charge or have his electricity disconnected.

Msunduzi Mayor Mike Tarr undertook to sort out the matter.

Tarr also had good news for residents that from next week there will be five additional officials in the rates hall to deal with billing queries. He said the cash-strapped municipality is not hiring more staff; the five are temporary workers who can be employed in a section where there is a demand for service.
