Hilton medical waste shock

2014-02-24 00:00

MEDICAL waste has been illegally dumped at the Wildlands Conservation Trust’s (WCT) recycling centre in Hilton.

WCT is investigating who dumped the waste, which included syringes, needles and ampoules, there.

When contacted on Friday, WCT spokesperson Lauren Laing said they would be opening a case with the police.

“Once we know who the owner of this is, we will be in a position to open a case,” said Laing.

“We hope to trace the medical waste using the batch numbers back to the people responsible. We will call a medical waste disposal to collect it from us.”

The medical waste, which was thrown in with normal waste at the recycling centre, was spotted by staff at the centre last Thursday morning.

Penny Maitland-Stuart put a message on Facebook that read, “Not sure who was responsible for this medical waste dumped at the recycling bins.

“I think The Quarry Centre needs to put cameras up for Wildlands to record registration numbers and vehicles using this very worthwhile facility.

“How thoughtless and disgusting; hope the perpetrators are found and prosecuted.”

Most comments on the post called for the person responsible to be prosecuted.
