Hilton play as today’s underdogs

2013-04-20 00:00

THERE is a full fixture list on the astros today with the independent schools back in the classroom and all the leading schools playing. One match took place yesterday afternoon between St Charles and Howick.

Today’s match on Beckingham at Hilton should draw a large crowd when the home side plays the KZN form team Northwood. The latter, coached by SA player Darryn Gallagher, have not lost a game in 10 starts this season. Both sides have played Jeppe with Hilton losing 2-3 at the Nomads Festival and Northwood winning 3-1 in Johannesburg last Saturday. This should indicate the Durban team winning again.

Westville have home advantage against Pretoria BHS, who beat Maritzburg College 3-0 last Saturday. Westville have lost three of their seven games played, while PBHS have lost two, drawn two, with two wins.

The losses were against Wynberg, arguably the top hockey school in the country at this stage, and Selborne. This game is likely to be an even contest.

Maritzburg College will be hosting DHS, who are in their centenary of hockey at the school. DHS have only played one game against St Andrews from Grahamstown, a match they lost badly. College have played seven games, with four wins and a draw against Selborne, with two losses against PBHS and Wynberg. They must go into the game as favourites.

Michaelhouse will be hosting Glenwood and this should be another keenly contested game.

The home side have played six matches with just a win against St Andrews School from Bloemfontein, draws against Pretoria Boys’ and KES and losses against Northwood, Jeppe and Grey HS.

Glenwood have played seven matches, losing against Paul Roos and drawing against Rondebosch with five wins, most significantly Kearsney and Queens. The last match is at Clifton where they will be hosting Kearsney. The latter have lost three games, Glenwood, Northwood and Paul Roos. They drew against Rondebosch and won the other four games. Hosts Clifton has just played one match where they lost against Maritzburg College. Kearsney should win tomorrow.

Fixtures in brief: Hilton vs Northwood; Westville vs Pretoria BHS; Maritzburg College vs DHS; Michaelhouse vs Glenwood; Clifton vs Kearsney; St Charles vs Howick (Friday)
