Hilton residents fuming over endless power cuts

2011-04-18 00:00

DOWNPOURS over several days left the residents of Hilton without power for most days last week and again last night.

Several residents called The Witness on Friday, saying that the power outage had begun at 5 pm on Thursday and had not been restored by the following day.

Municipal spokesperson Brian Zuma said: “The storm caused damage to a power line, which resulted in outages in Hilton, Howick, Winterskloof and Sweetwaters.”

Zuma added that the power remained out on Friday as the municipality was fixing the power line.

Residents of Hilton and many of the city’s suburbs were left in the dark, with all phone calls to the helpline left unattended to. The Witness also attempted to contact the helpline, but found the number rang unanswered for several minutes. Numerous residents were left without any information as to the cause of the blackout, or when it would be rectified, prompting one to say: “There are not words to describe how useless this municipality is!”

Zuma said: “When there are major problems like outages, there is too much volume of calls and the lines get congested. But the issue of a call centre is being addressed as a matter of urgency, and we hope that the mayor will be able to make an announcement soon.”

However, this does little to reassure residents of Oak Park, who also experienced three power outages during last week.
