Hilton water woes mount

2008-08-20 00:00

Residents in Hilton’s Hilary Road are fed up with random water cuts disrupting their lives and are demanding that the uMngeni Municipality fix the problem urgently.

Residents told The Witness that they have been experiencing water cuts at least once a month for over two years and that the problem intensified this month.

Resident Clive Frankland said there were four water cuts last week and another one yesterday. The water is usually cut off at around 3 am.

He said that the municipality does not warn the residents when the water cuts will occur.

“We recently went three days without water. The situation is ridiculous and it is especially difficult in the morning [when] we have to go to work,” said Frankland.

He said he and his daughter sometimes bath in the swimming pool in the morning. He added that he has complained to the municipality several times. The municipality has denied any knowledge of the water cuts.

Frankland’s neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said the problem seems only to affect residents in Hilary Road.

He said that the municipality has indicated that old water pipes are being repaired.

“The municipality does not even give us a warning. We have resorted to buying bottled water so that we are able to bath, cook and wash dishes,” he said.

Attempts to get comment from uMngeni municipal manager Dumisani Vilakazi were unsuccessful as he did not answer his phone.
