Hilton woman killed in crash after party

2013-11-04 00:00

A WEEKEND accident claimed the life of a young Hilton woman when the car she and her boyfriend were travelling in overturned on a road behind the Rotunda in Hilton.

It is believed that Danielle Schoeman (21) had been a passenger in the car, which was driven by her boyfriend Robert Williams Jnr. He is being treated for various injuries in Northdale Hospital.

According to reports, the couple had been returning from a Halloween party on Saturday morning when they were involved in the accident.

According to ER24 paramedic Andrew Rodgers, they arrived at the scene to find that Williams had been flung out of the car, while Schoeman was trapped.

“Her lower body was trapped by the car and we had to resuscitate while she was trapped, while waiting for the fire department to come with their jaws of life,” he said.

“After she had been removed, we realised that she was getting weaker and we ventilated her to ensure that she had sufficient oxygen,” he said.

“After an hour to an hour and 20 minutes, she was declared dead at the scene,” said Rodgers.

He said Williams was severely injured and was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital.

Speaking from his son’s hospital bedside, Robert Williams Snr said he was unsure of what had happened.

“Robbie is stable and we are waiting for him to be operated on in the next two to three days,” he said.

Williams Snr said they were devastated by the accident.

“My son had been studying music and sound engineering, but decided to take a gap year to do other jobs,” he said.

Attempts to get hold of the Schoeman family were unsuccessful.

A close family friend said the family was not ready to talk about the accident.

It is believed Schoeman worked at a Pietermaritzburg nightclub.

Police Colonel Jay Naicker said a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.
