Hindu celebration: hundreds mark Kavady in Marburg

2011-01-21 00:00

HUNDREDS of members of the Hindu community gathered at the Umbango temple in Marburg yesterday to take part in the annual Kavady festival.

The festival is celebrated between January and February every year by Hindus all over the world.

Yesterday’s proceedings saw those taking part in the festival carrying the traditional kavady and engaging in various acts of dedication, such as the piercing of body parts and offering of fruit, that represented their own personal grievances.

A public kavady festival, for those members of the faith who were unable to participate yesterday due to work commitments, will take place at the same venue on Sunday beginning at 6 am.

“It is a very important festival for us as it is a time when we can let go of the things that dictate our daily walks,” said a bystander.
