Hippo’s death: Our readers speak out

2008-07-16 00:00

Witness readers have expressed their dismay at the actions of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (EKZNW) in killing the wandering hippo.

“How can we condemn an animal to death when they don’t even know what they have done wrong? Nonkululeko did not deserve to die. Especially not the way she did. What happened to ‘innocent until proven guilty’?

Reacting to EKZNW’s statement that “this hippo was of no conservation value to EKZNW”, Samantha Gregory asked, “How can that be? Every animal on our planet is precious … And as for it being easier and cheaper just to shoot her … shame on you. She was not a ‘problem animal’ as EKZNW seems to think. … Deeper thought should have gone into her well being, Nonkululeko deserved at least that.”

Some readers believe that alternatives should have been explored in solving the problem of wandering Nonkululeko.

“I find it difficult to believe that there were no alternatives available to perhaps save this animal and relocate it to a conservation area … aren’t we supposed to be conserving the wildlife for future generations? Appalling behaviour by EKZNW!” said one reader on the Witness website.

“They should have shot her with a tranquil gun and relocated her. Such a loss for our South Africa,” said another.

“A fair number of nature conservation officials are closet hunters and must have been panting to shoot the poor old hippo,” wrote another. “They also don’t care about the poor publicity. It would have been much more sensible to dart or trap the beast and cart it to St Lucia or wherever.”
