Hired gun tells of hit on couple

A 28-YEAR-OLD man described in a statement before the high court in Pietermaritzburg yesterday how he shot the wife of a man who was the target of a hired hitman when she raised the alarm and began to run away.

Her husband was killed by his accomplice.

The murders of Bongani Thwala and Happiness Nokuthula Khanyile took place at Bilanyoni Trust near Paulpietersburg in northern KZN on October 24.

Mduduzi Richman Kunene pleaded guilty to the charges before Judge Rishi Seegobin and an assessor yesterday and was convicted.

Sentencing is due today.

In a statement read to court by his legal aid attorney, Kelvin Singh, Kunene said he was approached on October 22 by Siphiwe Dlamini and another man referred to only as “Jerome” to help in the killing of one of Siphiwe’s relatives by the name of Bongani.

“There was a feud between Siphiwe and Bongani,”he said.

Kunene said Jerome received R15 000 from Siphiwe to carry out the job and a balance of R5 000 was to be paid on completion.

Kunene’s job was to assist the hitman (Sifiso) by showing him where the target lived and to keep a lookout.

“Jerome gave me a gun and told me not to use it,” he said.

The next day he and the hitman went to Bongani’s house.

He was still at work in his bottle store next door and they kept watch.

However, Khanyile saw them and alerted her husband, naming Kunene.

He shot her several times, following her as she ran away, and fired a fourth shot after she fell.

Kunene said he heard two shots and returned to where Sifiso was standing and saw Bongani lying in the doorway with blood coming out of his forehead.

“He was dead,” he said.

After they left Sifiso gave him muthi to “cleanse” himself, he said.
