Hit and run: Boy (14) admitted to hospital

2011-07-19 00:00

A 14-YEAR-OLD boy was admitted to Medi-Clinic in Pietermaritzburg after a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Alexandra and Lindup roads at Alexandra police station on Saturday.

Rudie Opperman (14) was hit by bakkie, which had just missed his older brother, Marcus, and his mother, Sharon, as they crossed the road.

Sharon said the bakkie sped through a red robot, hitting Rudie and smashing its windscreen.

“He flipped through the air and landed on the ground, then the car briefly paused and drove on.”

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the driver, Austin Matemba (34), was arrested and appeared in court yesterday. Opperman said she was told he had turned himself in.
