Hit by taxi: Traffic cop in stable but serious condition

2012-07-07 00:00

A PROVINCIAL Road Traffic Inspectorate officer is in a stable but serious condition in hospital after she was hit by a taxi on the N3 on Tuesday.

Michele Price (43) was knocked down as she tried to remove a tyre from the middle lane on the N3 near the Peter Brown turn-off.

The driver who hit her did not stop, but reported to police later that evening.

Her mother, Shirley Price, told Weekend Witness yesterday that Price was sedated and the family was hoping for the best.

“The doctors were a little worried about her head and lungs, but let’s just say now she is stable and we are hoping for the best.”

She said the motorist had later said he had not seen Michele.

“Michele was in full uniform, wearing her reflector jacket and her police car was right next to the road. How he did not see her is strange.”

Two officers who work with Price said the RTI used the road speed cameras to track the taxi that hit her.

“Through the eNatis system they managed to trace the registration of the vehicle and they traced it back to an owner in Howick.

“They found the vehicle parked behind his house,” said one of the officers.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the driver later reported the matter to the police. A case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated.

Last year, a police traffic officer was knocked down and dragged by a taxi in the Pietermaritzburg city centre and woman officer was killed by a motorcyclist on the N3.
