Hitlon’s Shields hits superb ton

2011-01-22 00:00

THE last of the first round matches in the Sunfoil School’s Night league took place on Thursday when Hilton defeated Michaelhouse.

Despite this being the highest scoring match so far, most of the excitement went out of the game when Michaelhouse started at snail’s pace in pursuit of the 235 posted by Hilton. There was some excitement at the end to see whether Michaelhouse would stave off a bonus point to be scored by Hilton. This they did by making the necessary 188 runs in the 40 overs. Michaelhouse ended on 191 for 8 after losing wickets regularly through their innings. David Brill (26 not out) and Luke Sales added (undefeated 41) formed the top partnership. After the loss of three early wickets, Jason Shields and Sebastian Negri took Hilton’s score from 35 for 3 to 170 before Negri was out, where he played a supporting role to a superb century by Shields.

Hilton will be disappointed with their bowling and fielding where they yielded 42 extras of which 17 were leg byes, the top score in the Michaelhouse innings. Paul Hewat (27 in 63 balls) and Andrew Stephens (25 in 21) were the other major contributions in the Michaelhouse chase.

Hilton 235 (Negri 32, Shields 107)

Michaelhouse 191-8 (Hewat 27, A Stephens 25, Brill 26*)

Hilton won by 44 runs
