Hitman in for R5?000 in murder

A 22-YEAR-OLD man was jailed for 20 years by high court Judge Gregory Kruger in Pietermaritzburg yesterday after admitting he took part in the murder of a woman at uMzimkulu near Ixopo last November in exchange for a promise of R5 000.

Zwelidumile Mtolo said in a statement he and his friend, Moses Gwabavu, were approached on November 18 by an “elderly [man] known to me as Mr Gwabavu” who asked them to kill his wife.

“I was unemployed and agreed to assist him,” he said.

He said the three of them went to the home of the victim, Princess Nonelisa Mxinwa (46), at night. Gwabavu had a knife, Mtolo had an axe and Moses had a firearm, he said.

Mtolo said that after entering the house, he stood at the entrance and saw the other two enter the lounge. The woman entered the lounge and Moses fired a single gunshot at her chest, causing her to fall down.

“Moses thereafter took some money, airtime and an amplifier and we left,” said Mtolo.

Kruger said the fact that Mtolo was a hired killer shows he has a callous disregard for human life. In his favour was the fact that he played a lesser role than the others and offered to testify against his co-perpetrators.

Other mitigating factors were that he was young and a first offender. He also openly confessed, showed remorse and has good prospects of rehabilitation.
