Hlatshwayo takes over as mayor of Zululand District

2014-06-24 00:00

THE long-time political ally of National Freedom Party (NFP) leader Zanele Magwaza-Msibi has taken over from her as the mayor of the Zululand District Municipality.

Mpiyakhe Alson Hlatshwayo, the former council speaker, was inaugurated to the top job after he was elected unopposed. Hlatshwayo is no stranger to the mayoral duties, having served two times as a mayor in the Paulpietersburg-based eDumbe Municipality before he was recalled by his former party in 2010.

Hlatshwayo was one of the mayors in the IFP-led councils who were recalled in September 2010 amid tensions within the party after Magwaza-Msibi led a faction that wanted leadership change.

Although the party had at the time said the recalling was to strengthen its dysfunctional councils, it was widely believed that it was because he was a supporter of Magwaza-Msibi.

Hlatshwayo said yesterday he was thankful to the party leadership for entrusting him with the mayoral position.
