Hoax messages: send reports to us, say police

2012-10-05 00:00

THE police yesterday urged the public to report incidents of violence to them, after hoax messages that warned of motorists being assaulted, popped up on social media.

A message posted yesterday warned people and told them to avoid Retief and Church Street when driving home at night.

“Please be careful when driving home tonight. Avoid town if possible, especially Church Road (sic). They are rioting and many motorists have already been assaulted and their vehicles have been destroyed,” the message read.

“They are also protesting on the Armitage and Market Road offramps from the N3,” it concluded.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said they had received complaints of protests at the corner of Retief and Church streets, but a patrol conducted found that “all was in order”.

“No incidents were reported at Armitage Road. The public is urged to immediately report such incidents to the police or contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” said Zwane.
