Hockey: Bumper programme

2011-05-03 00:00

THERE is a bumper programme of Parklane SuperSpar A-League schoolgirls’ hockey matches this week.

The players should be refreshed, if a little rusty, after the lengthy Easter break and spectators can look forward to some top matches.

On Thursday, defending champions Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School (GHS) host Howick at 3 pm on their Shelagh Bowness Greenfields Turf in Alexandra Road and their strong side should be able to put together another comprehensive win following the league-opening 5-0 defeat of a gutsy Voortrekker.

At 3 pm on The Wykeham Collegiate turf on Thursday, the home side, under coach Brenda Franklin, host Treverton in what should be a game that could go either way.

On Saturday, Treverton host GHS at 10.20 am, St John’s entertain St Anne’s at 10 am, Vories are away to Epworth at 8 am and the AB Jackson Greenfields Turf in Princess Margaret Drive plays host to the Howick versus Wykeham Collegiate clash at 8 am. No result was available from last Saturday’s match between Treverton and visitors St Anne’s.

This year’s A-League looks to be extremely competitive although the usual suspects, GHS and St Anne’s, are the strongest contenders for the final and both sides will be keen to build on their success on the KZN Spar north and south region wins earlier this season, as they have both qualified for the provincial finals at St Mary’s in Kloof later in the season.
