Hockey: GHS and Wykeham collegiate in u18 tournament finals this weekend

THIS weekend sees the long-awaited finals of the Spar KZN Shield Teens U18 Hockey Tournament, which takes place at St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls in Kloof and nearby Thomas More College, where 10 girls’ first teams from around KwaZulu-Natal will do battle for the title.

This is the second year that the tournament is being held with the teams all having qualified in the regional playoffs that took place at the beginning of the year. Close to 80 schools competed in the regional games with the winners of each region advancing through to the finals.

The finals will be divided into two pools with five teams in each pool and the games lasting 25 minutes one way. Games on Saturday will be split between both St Mary’s and Thomas More, and Sunday’s games will be played at St Mary’s.

An exhibition match at lunchtime on Saturday will be between the Kearsney first team and the KZN Coastal Raiders.

Making their second appearance in the finals are Ferrum High School, Durban Girls’ College, St Mary’s and runner-up in the 2011 tournament, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School (GHS).

Joining them are six newcomers — Ladysmith High School, Creston College, The Wykeham Collegiate, Durban Girls’ High School, Danville Girls’ High and Empangeni High School.

The pools will comprise of hosts St Mary’s, Danville, The Wykeham Collegiate, Ferrum and Ladysmith in Pool A; and Creston College, Durban Girls’ College, Durban GHS, Pietermaritzburg GHS and Empangeni High School in Pool B.
