Hockey: GHS end the year with six victories

2009-11-17 00:00

THE Girls’ High School first indoor hockey team have concluded their season and emerged with a full house of victories in the six matches they played against local schools in Pietermaritzburg.

“Unfortunately, in indoor hockey we do not get to play everybody like we do in outdoor hockey, but our results were very pleasing nevertheless,” said GHS first team coach Taryn de Winnaar.

The coach said that as in the outdoor hockey season, captain Amy Johnson and her deputy, Julia Hudson, led a young GHS side exceptionally well again during the comparatively short, fourth term indoor hockey season.

In the six indoor hockey matches they played and won, GHS scored 48 goals with just two against.

“That the ‘Green Machine’ went on to win all their matches makes for a fantastic ending to a long hockey year,” De Winnaar said.

“Amy had a superb season, using her experience and solid play to her team’s advantage. Julia Hudson, Ros Flint and Kirsty Camons contributed to this and as the seniors made a big impact.”

De Winnaar said the youngsters in the team learnt a huge amount during the outdoor and indoor seasons, with each one of them putting their hands up with some fine individual performances during the year, which contributed in no small measure to the team’s overall success.
