Hockey- Germany beat gutsy SA women

2008-06-15 00:00

DESPITE a hardworking performance, the Spar SA women’s hockey team were beaten 2-0 by Germany in their final league match of the Setanta Trophy Four Nations tournament in Dublin over the weekend, writes JONATHAN COOK.

Germany, ranked third in the world, were frustrated by resolute South African defence in the first half, which ended 0-0.

With 12 minutes to the final hooter, Germany finally penetrated the world’s 12th-ranked team via Maike Stockel’s straight penalty corner.

Tarryn Bright’s return from injury saw the disciplined SA team up their tempo, but goalscoring opportunities weren’t finished off and Germany wrapped up the match three minutes from full-time.

After the third/fourth playoff versus Ireland, SA play two Tests against the same country before heading to Holland. Great Britain meet Germany in the final.
