Hockey: Green machine destory st john’s in A-league

2011-06-08 00:00

HOSTS St John’s were under pressure against defending champions Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School in the Parklane Superspar A-League action last Friday.

The 5-0 score ensured that the Green Machine ended their campaign on a high note.

The match started with a high tempo, both teams wanting to win just as much as the other.

Girls’ High eventually cracked the deadlock through the ever present Vicki Jonker, who scored two goals along with a Sine Zungu contribution of two goals as well.

The fifth goal was an awesome field goal by Lunga Zulu, who wrong-footed the defenders and smashed the ball high into the back of the net. Hlubi Sipamla of GHS was again instrumental in defence.

The St John’s team, as well as coach Kyle Nipper, must be commended on playing an attacking style of hockey, always ready to run at the opposition defence and do their best to try and capitalise.

They also worked hard in defence, doing their best to thwart the attacks.

Girls’ High has scored a total of 66 goals and conceded only eight — these results are from the Parklane Superspar A-League as well as the two festivals they attended. And of the 66 scored, Sine Zungu has netted 22 and Vicki Jonker 20.

Meanwhile, Treverton beat Voortrekker 2-0 with Sabrina Miles and Danni Cairns outstanding for the winners.

The remaining A-League matches saw Epworth take on St Anne’s at Epworth yesterday, while today Epworth host The Wykeham Collegiate at 4 pm.

On Saturday, St John’s entertain TWC at 11 am.
