BESIDES meeting on the rugby field, Kearsney and Hilton plus Westville and Michaelhouse locked sticks in the hockey arena.

Michaelhouse and Westville drew 2-2 and Hilton edged out Kearsney 2-1.

Michaelhouse 2 Westville 2

This was Michaelhouse’s first home game of the season and with Westville ranked at two in the country and the hosts six, it was always going to be an entertaining clash.

Westville could have struck first, but shot wide from a penalty corner and it was the hosts who opened the scoring in the 10th minute when centre Gareth Macaskill found goal with a superb reverse-stick finish. They could have doubled the lead soon after, but a flick went wide, this proving just the opening Westville needed as they came back into the game. Two defensive mistakes by Michaelhouse before half time saw all their hard work undone as Westville pounced to score twice and enjoy a 2-1 advantage going into the second half.

Chad Fourie levelled the score early in the second stanza, but it was Westville who finished the stronger, denied further goals from two short corners thanks to a save at the post by Dale Beckley and ’keeper Justin Miller.

Both sides left the field rueing missed chances and thoughts of what could have been in a match that could have gone either way, the spoils there for the taking.

Hilton 2 Kearsney 1

Playing at Hilton, Kearsney dominated early on, applying great pressure for much of the first half. Despite numerous opportunities, Hilton’s ’keeper was up to the task, keeping his side in the match. A late first-half goal from Bill Ntuli saw Kearsney 1-0 up at the start of the second half. A turnaround from Hilton saw them take charge of the second period, scoring two field goals which was enough to take the honours, the second strike coming in the dying moments of the match.

In another clash in the Midlands, St Charles and Clifton drew 2-2.
