Hold-ups: man gets 65 years

2010-09-09 00:00

A 49-YEAR-OLD man who was involved in two armed robberies in the Mtubatuba district more than a decade ago, during which a security guard was shot dead, was sentenced to an effective 27 years’ imprisonment by Judge Leona Theron yesterday.

The robberies took place at Nyalazi Store, Hlabisa, on August 30, 1997, and at Vakashela Service Station, St Lucia, on March 23, 1999.

During the latter incident about R25 000 was taken and a guard employed by Executive Guarding Services, Antonio Mbango, was killed.

The robbers escaped in a Mazda bakkie taken from Zephenia Ngubane — an employee of the local council — who fled, leaving the keys in the ignition when he heard the gunfire.

David Mhlanga was sentenced to a total of 65 years’ jail.
