Holidaying family plunge to their deaths in waterfall

SABIE — An entire family fell to their deaths in a waterfall near Sabie on Friday afternoon.

The holidaymakers, Adele (34) and Pieter Prinsloo (38) and their 13-year-old daughter Shanté, were trying to cross hand in hand above the Vaxane falls when one of them apparently slipped and dragged the others to their deaths.

The Prinsloos would have celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary today. The high school sweethearts married in a midnight ceremony on New Year’s Eve in 1998.

The Benoni family arrived on Friday for a holiday at the Sabie Star chalets, and drove to the Vaxane Estate in the afternoon to walk in the mountains and kloofs.

At the 30-metre-high waterfall, they apparently attempted to walk across the wet rocks, but fell and suffered severe head injuries.

A farm worker raised the alarm in the late afternoon when he saw a body in the pool at the foot of the falls. A rescue team was summoned and at about 10 pm, Adele’s body was found at the edge of the pool.

Police divers were called to join the search.

Just after midnight, Shanté’s body was found about 30 metres downstream, caught under a tree.

Only after the search had been suspended was it realised that Pieter was also missing. The search team returned to the waterfall on Saturday morning, where Pieter’s body was found at the bottom of the 1,5-metre-deep pool.
