Holmes says it’s elementary: to swot, get injured

2014-09-04 00:00

YESTERDAY’S ceremony at Durban University of Technology (DUT) saw nearly 1 000 students graduate.

Cum laude graduate Kyle Holmes (23) from DUT’s Pietermaritzburg campus also gained a merit award to go with his BTech in Civil Engineering.

He partly credits his success to sports injuries. “My first year out of school I was playing with the UKZN first cricket team and I got a stress fracture in my back.”

He took up hockey, but damaged his knees, effectively ending his sport and forcing him to concentrate on studies.

Holmes’s experiential year spent working with a consulting engineering company specialising in water engineering fired his interest. “That got me to understand water technology.”

He is now considering whether to broaden his experience working in the transport and urban engineering field.

Yesterday’s DUT graduation ceremonies saw 981 students graduate from the University’s six faculties.

A total of 6 474 students have graduated from DUT this year compared to 5 977 students who graduated in 2013.

Two honorary doctorates were conferred – one to Don Mkhwanazi for his contribution to the promotion of Black Economic Empowerment in South Africa, and the other to film producer Anant Singh for his use of film in opposing apartheid.
