Holy festival: 500 attend procession

2008-01-24 00:00

The annual Thai Poosum Kavady was held at the Sri Siva Soobramoniar and Marriamen temples in Pietermaritzburg’s Langalibalele Street last night.

More than 500 devotees turned out.

Some carried a wooden arch bedecked with bright yellow marigolds and milk in brass vessels attached to the kavadies.

Danash Pillay (left) had his tongue and cheeks pierced with needles and limes dangling from hooks piercing his skin.

The procession carrying the kavadies left the temple via Thomas and Church streets before returning to the temple along William Street.

Thai Poosam Kavady is a Hindu religious festival dedicated to the Lord Murugan.

It is celebrated by Tamil people.
