Home alone: Boy (5) falls to his death

2010-07-22 00:00

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD boy, who was home alone, died when he fell from the fifth floor in a Durban block of flats yesterday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the boy, whose name cannot be disclosed until his parents have been notified, was sleeping when his nanny went to a nearby shop. He fell at about 5 pm.

“The nanny returned from the shop to find that the child had fallen and died,” said Naicker.

He said police established that the boy woke up and discovered that he was alone. He apparently went to a window to peep through, and fell.

Naicker said the boy’s parents are living in Johannesburg, and that police are still trying to reach them.

People who witnessed the incident were traumatised when police arrived. “Even the nanny was in state of shock,” Naicker said.
