Home invaders murder woman

2009-10-26 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG woman, Fikisiwe Mnikathi (51) from Gomora near Plessislaer, was murdered by home invaders at the weekend.

Mnikathi was found naked on her bedroom floor early yesterday morning, with an open wound to her head.

SAPS spokeswoman Inspector Joey Jeevan said three men wearing balaclavas and armed with handguns and iron pipes entered the house and assaulted Mnikathi’s brother and tied his hands and legs before going to her bedroom.

They tied her hands and legs, assaulted her and stabbed her to death before fleeing in her Mazda Rustler.

The vehicle was recovered by her son on the old main road in Plessislaer after he was contacted by neighbours. It is believed he was on his way to report the murder when he saw the vehicle abandoned on the side of the road. The motive is believed to be robbery.

Jeevan said the postmortem examination will reveal whether Mnikathi was raped.

Her son, Sazi Zuma, a civil engineering student at DUT, told The Witness the killers also took R7 000.

“I am severely shocked about the brutal murder as even her braids were scattered all over, which shows that she had been fighting.”

He said that his mother was a money lender and was “not that popular”.

Zuma said he was away from the house studying for an exam, which he will not be able to write.
