Bruni is part of a group that does voluntary work in Mphophomeni and he wrote about a man he met in one of the poorer neighbourhoods who was helping his destitute, Aids-stricken neighbour.

His story was praised by one of the judges for being “a cleanly-written, moving account of one of the many small acts of heroism that is happening in response to the Aids tragedy”.

The runner-up in the Open category is Thokoza Radebe for his story about an old musician and he wins R3 000.

Winner in the Snapshot category for stories under 800 words is Underberg vet Tod Collins for his story about an encounter with a herder in the Berg. He takes home R2 000.

In the Schools category, Luyanda Ntuli of Eshowe High School wins R1 000 for her story about how she rediscovered her mother tongue, Zulu.
