Horror tales of ruin

2010-09-25 00:00

THERE are some “horror stories of farmers who have gone under because they believed businessman Roux Shabangu’s “big promises”, says Agri SA deputy president Theo de Jager.

“There were big promises made to some of the black workers that they would gain from the transactions.

“Farmers have gone under … because this guy said the deals have gone through and they should find themselves other places because they would not be able to stay on their farms.”

Kiewiet van Rooyen, a former farmer from Thabazimbi, said he signed a contract that later fell through.

“They came to the farm in a helicopter to value it, accompanied by a woman who said she was from Land Affairs. They said they had a mandate, but I never saw one. I asked again and again for the mandate.

“Roux said he had R24 billion to buy up farms.

“What I found strange was that the farm would have been registered in his [Shabangu’s] name.”

Van Rooyen said Shabangu told him that after the sale the farm would “go to the workers on the farm”, and he should tell them this — later there was anger when this failed to happen.
