Horse dies after colliding with car

2014-01-28 00:00

A HORSE died after colliding with a car on Sweetwaters Road yesterday, just a week after The Witness reported on the danger posed by stray animals wandering in Pietermaritzburg suburbs.

Nanette Cocksedge, who was at the accident scene a few minutes after it happened, alerted the SPCA. She said the stallion was believed to have been frightened by a dog and ran into the road, badly damaging the car it hit.

“Luckily the driver was not injured, but his car was badly damaged,” said Cocksedge, adding that the horse died some time after the collision due to its extensive injuries, before the SPCA inspectors arrived. “It is upsetting that no one is taking responsibility for these animals. This could have been a worse accident,” she said.

SPCA inspector Robyn Holmes said she was alerted to the incident at about 7.30 am. “While preparing to go to the scene, they phoned, telling me that the horse had just died,” she said, adding the horses were not branded, making it difficult to identify the owner.

The pound master would be contacted to remove the animal, she said.
