Horse events: Youngsters in the limelight

2011-05-31 00:00

IT was a proud day for parents who accompanied their children to the Royal Show’s equestrian inter-school and children’s showing competition yesterday.

Six-year-old Madison Shaw of Howick Preparatory School won the first round of children’s showing on her pony, Silver Star.

“I love my pony,” she said.

In her excitement she whispered to her trainer as The Witness snapped a picture, “Tomorrow I’m going to tell my teacher that I’m in the newspaper.”

Her mother, Beth, who is one of South Africa’s leading equine therapists, said, “I’m really proud of her.”

She said her daughter trains three to four times a week, adding, “All her hard work has paid off.”

Emily Kyllonen (11) ofthe KwaZulu-Natal Horse Society participated in the 80/90 cm accumulator class.

She said, “I was so terrified. This was my first proper show. It was hectic.”

However, she said the nerves disappeared when she got on the course. Kyllonen, who only started riding in February, came second out of seven entrants.

The Royal Show Equestrian organiser, Jackie Pappas, was happy with how the event turned out.

“The day was absolutely fabulous and all the kids had fun. The arena was just immaculate. The arena staff were helpful and efficient,” said Pappas.

About 30 children participated in the competition.

Today there is equestrian inter-breed show and a double slalom jumping pair in the main arena.
