Horse fair a great success

The Natal Horse Fair in aid of the KwaZulu-Natal SPCA Horse Care Unit was held at the Lions River Polo Club recently.

This charity event was well supported by spectators and they saw demonstrations of various equine activities culminating in an exciting seniors international polo match between Chile and South Africa, which ended in a 9-9 draw. In total, about R30 000 was raised in cash and donated items for the Horse Care Unit.

• The Winter Show-jumping Festival was held recently in Gauteng and the stylish Lexi Carter riding Pickpocket won the second leg of the Farnham Riders Grand Prix Tour where there were 35 starters with 18 horses going clear in the first round. Close behind her in second place was Dominey Alexander riding

Di Williamson’s Lochwood Lothario Lad. Carter was also third with her grey imported horse Patton de Martimont.

In the second World Cup Qualifier of the season, Sean Henderson, on Fact and Fancy, was the victor riding over a very testing track built by Alan Stacey.

• Discovery Health have agreed to sponsor two Nations Cup team events for junior and pony riders. This exciting innovation will take place from October 30 to November 2 at Burlington Stables in Gauteng, where there will be teams from Germany. All competitors will compete on pooled borrowed horses and the national selectors will choose the teams.

• July is a very hectic time for pony riders in KZN with the Pony Club Interbranch event taking place at the Royal Showgrounds from July 2 to July 5. This event also includes an international team from Ireland.

The South African Pony Riders Championships take place at Durban Shongweni Club from July 4 to July 11.

The famous Pony Show is in its 48th year and will run at the Royal Showgrounds from July 8 to July 11.

• This weekend sees top-class polo at the Karkloof Country Club. The Jonsson Workwear Karkloof Classic starts on Friday and will continue until Sunday.

A total of 24 teams will be taking part and the main section will be at 15 goal level.
