Horseracing fever is far from over for the province

HORSERACING fever is far from over for the province. The Dundee July Rural horseracing event, now in its 10th year, will be kicking up some dust on Saturday July 19.

Since its inception, the race has grown in popularity and has become a major event on the KZN social calendar.

Department of Sport and Recreation spokesperson Bheki Ncube explained that while the race is modelled on the Durban July, it showcases traditional rural horse racing. “The jockeys and horses are drawn from ordinary village riders from all over the province,” he said.

According to Ncube, the event now attracts participants from Mpumalanga and Lesotho.

Glitz and glamour have also become a major part of the event, with local fashion designers showcasing their work. “As has become tradition there will be a multi-cultural street parade through the Dundee town centre on the Friday, and will end with an all-night musical extravangza after the race.”

For more information on booking a trading stand or corporate hospitality space, contact event co-ordinator Sandile Mbonane at or call 033 897 9400.

The race will be held at the Dundee horseracing track. The event is organised by the KZN Department of Sports and Recreation in partnership with Gold Circle as well as the uMzinyathi District and the Endumeni Municipality.
