Hospital: MEC pitches in

2010-04-06 00:00

KWAZULU-NATAL Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo spent yesterday working at St Appolinaris Hospital in Creighton along with colleagues to give the doctors there a break over the Easter weekend.

Health spokesman Chris Maxon said the hospital has too few staff because it is in a rural area where many doctors do not want to work. He said many prefer to go overseas rather than work far from town, thus “starving” rural communities of this important health care resource.

Dhlomo said the department has advertised numerous posts for medical doctors at St Appolinaris, “but when or if people come for interviews they never come back”.
