Hospital bosses suspended after nurse turned patient away

2013-06-13 00:00

TWO top officials at the Newcastle Provincial Hospital were suspended following the death of a patient who was turned away last week.

Delivering his budget speech at the legislature yesterday, Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo announced the suspension of the hospital’s chief executive officer and medical manager for the death.

“We have taken a decision to suspend the chief executive officer and medical manager,” said Dhlomo.

He said the department’s preliminary investigation found the patient was brought to the hospital by a private car and the relatives of the patient were directed to take the patient to Madadeni Hospital by a nurse from the children’s section of the hospital.

Dhlomo said an investigation has been launched into a separate incident of negligence at the kwaMashu community health care centre after a woman in labour was turned away this week, resulting in her baby’s death.

He condemned the incidents, saying that government policy dictated that a patient presented at a health facility should be attended to, assessed and stabilised before he or she could be referred to the next appropriate health care facility. He sent apologies to the families of the two people.

Unveiling the department’s R28 billion budget, Dhlomo said R591 million would be spent on administration, R13 billion on district health services, R972m on emergency medical services and R8 billion on provincial hospital services. He added that a further R2 billion will be spent on central hospital services, R992 million on health sciences and training, R143 million on health care services and R1.6 billion on health facilities.
