Hospital clears sewage

2014-03-28 00:00

PATIENTS, nurses and doctors at Edendale Hospital can breathe a sigh of relief as finally some action is being taken to resolve the sewage problems that led to the closure of the main theatre.

KwaZulu-Natal Health Department spokesperson Sebe Zwane yesterday confirmed that the main theatre was affected due to the problem of sewage leakages in this area. “This problem was swiftly responded to, as the contractor was called out immediately to deal with this matter,” said Zwane.

The Witness published two articles describing how sewage seeped into the out patients department and later into the second floor where the main theatre is.

“Due to this situation, the hospital could not perform operations on emergency and urgent cases, and these cases had to be diverted to Grey’s Hospital,” said Zwane.

She said contingency plans have been put in place to deal with the sewage leaks.

According to Zwane, the project manager was on site to supervise the unblocking of the sewer lines.

“Elective cases have been rescheduled. Some doctors are deployed to Grey’s Hospital to attend to cases that are diverted to this facility,” said Zwane.

She said Edendale Hospital’s referring facilities have been notified to divert patients to Grey’s Hospital. Zwane said life threatening cases that cannot be transferred to Grey’s Hospital will be attended to in the other smaller theatres that have not been affected at Edendale Hospital.

She said while the sewage leakage has been resolved, time was needed to “disinfect the main theatre and for the stench to subside”.
