Hospital crisis

2008-05-22 00:00

Northdale Hospital in this city has been in the news for a long time because of instances of maltreatment of patients and a general sense conveyed of an institution in a shambolic state. In keeping with this pattern, news has broken of a basic lack of essential stock such as nappies for babies, syringes and gloves, light bulbs and bin bags.

This is the sort of situation that could easily evoke from caring staff the same sort of exasperated frustration which was shown recently by Dr Mark Blaylock at one of this province’s rural hospitals when he tossed the photograph of the MEC for Health, Peggy Nkonyeni, into a rubbish bin.

The departmental reaction to a crisis such as that at Northdale is one of characteristic spin that claims that all is under control and that complaints are exaggerated. The fact of the matter is that forward planning is woefully inadequate and that this radically affects the quality of patient care.
