Hostages: man to be sent for observation

2014-07-15 00:00

A MAN accused of holding his family hostage for seven hours at Imbali in February will be sent to Fort Napier Hospital for mental observation.

Mandla Ngcobo (28), who appeared to be confused during his appearance in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday, is waiting for a bed to become available at the hospital.

Ngcobo is charged with contravening a protection order granted to his ex-girlfriend Nokuthula Zondi. The terms of the order prohibited Ngcobo from assaulting, threatening or intimidating Zondi.

He is also charged with robbery for taking a police officer’s firearm, resisting arrest, discharging the firearm in a public place, and the attempted murder of four police officers and Zondi’s new partner.

A large scar visible on his forehead was apparently the result of his trying to take his own life.

Magistrate Ntsoaki Ndawonde remanded Ngcobo until July 18.
