IS IT the vibrant sound of an African World Cup or a bleating din? Whatever your view on the noise produced by vuvuzelas, being in a stadium where hundreds are blown in unison could cause serious damage to your hearing, say researchers at Pretoria University. Derek Watts and the Carte Blanche Medical team investigate to see whether or not soccer match-goers need to take precautions. To find out more, tune in to M-Net (channel 101) at 7 pm tonight.

Other highlights this week include:


• 50/50 — SABC2, 7.30 pm: The environmental programme tackles the issue of “scavenger miners” and toxic mine water being discharged in the Blesbokspruit by Grootvlei Mine. Also on the programme is a feature on the new Gautrain.


• Prankz — M-Net, 7 pm: Prankz scours the Internet for the web’s best viral video.

• 3rd Degree — World Cup Fever —, 9.30 pm: 3rd Degree looks at how sport can be used as a nation-building tool, and what fans can look forward to, from Diski Dancing puppets to open air television parks.

• Nurse Jackie — M-Net, 10.30 pm: Veteran ER nurse Jackie Peyton tries to make something good come from a senseless death at her under-funded Manhattan emergency room.


• Without A Trace — SABC2, 10 pm: A churchgoing, stay-at-home mom goes missing and the team suspects she may not be as innocent as her husband believes.

• Law & Order Criminal Intent — SABC3, 10.15 pm: A Midwestern teenager disappears during a school trip to New York, and a related missing young woman leads them to the son of a high-powered judge, who finds himself on the wrong side of the law.


• Top Billing — SABC3, 7.30 pm: So you think sport is a serious business? Think again. Eight of South Africa’s funniest ­funny-men have just returned from a triumphant “away” tour at the Royal Albert Hall in London with their runaway hit Bafunny Bafunny. Top Billing gets the lowdown on their success, as Kagiso “Kaka” Lediga, Loyiso “Laduuuma” Gola, Nik “Bokkie” Rabinowitz and captain, Barry “The Cousin” Hilton carbo-load on gourmet burgers before pitting their wit and kicking boots against a bunch of guys who really know their way round the pitch.


• The Witches – SABC3, 9.30 pm: A young boy is taken to England by his grandmother. At their hotel, a group of witches have gathered to prepare a plot to rid the world of all children.
