Hotel closed over licence violation

BUSINESSES that ignore liquor licence regulations do so at their own peril.

This was the strong message sent out by Pietermaritzburg’s Mountain Rise station commander, Brigadier Francis Bantham, after police this week closed down a city hotel and yesterday arrested and charged the hotel owner with transgressing the Liquor Act.

The prominent 60-year-old businessman is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

He was released on warning pending his court appearance.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said it was alleged that the businessman allowed people who were leasing the hotel from him to use his liquor licence illegally, instead of applying for their own licence.

She said the act provided for liquor licences to be transferred in certain circumstances, if the correct procedures were followed.

The businessman also owns a nightclub in Pietermaritzburg.

However, police closed it down in July, allegedly because of a similar transgression, said Jeevan.

The nightclub’s doors remain shut.
