Hottest acts in world music to rock Durban at Mamas

TWO of the hottest acts in world music, Miguel and Trey Songz, are set to perform at the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards (Mamas) in Durban this weekend.

Grammy-winning R’nB superstar Miguel has enjoyed massive success since releasing his hit All I Want Is You in 2010. His second album, Kaleidoscope Dreams, was released in October 2012 and one of the singles off the album, Adorn, won the Grammy for best R’nB song at the 2012 awards.

Speaking about performing at the Mamas — which take place at the ICC on June 7 — the singer said: “What I love most about Africa is the people and the spirit there. What makes me most proud to be involved in the Mama is the feeling that my music has reached further than I imagined it could … it’s inspiring.”

Songz is another award-winning singer-songwriter, whose hits include the Grammy-nominated Can’t Help But Wait, club banger Say Aah, Bottoms Up (featuring Nicki Minaj), Can’t Be Friends, and Na Na.

His 2012 album Chapter V, the follow-up to Passion, Pleasure and Pain (2010), was released in August 2012 and debuted at number one on the Billboard charts.

Songz told The Witness, “I’m excited to finally be going back to Durban. I went once just for a day but this time I’m spending more time to get to know the people and the culture.

“I can’t wait to perform at the awards show, especially since it’s live for the first time ever. It’s going to be amazing to feel the energy when I’m on that stage and see some of the best talent that Africa has to offer.”

The two American stars will join the best artists from across Africa, including Diamond (Tanzania), Wizkid (Nigeria), Phyno (Nigeria), Yuri da Cunha (Angola), and South Africans Uhuru, Mafikizolo, Oskido and Professor.

American stand-up comic, film and television star Marlon Wayans will host the event, which be broadcast live, from 10 pm on Saturday, around the world on MTV, MTV Base and BET International. Around six million people are expected to watch the awards.

Among the SA nominees are Durban acts, Big Nuz, The Arrows, Gangs of Ballet, Professor and Zakes Bantwini.

Also nominated are AKA, Goldfish, Heavy K, Khuli Chana, LCNVL, Mafikizolo, Matthew Mole, Mi Casa, Michael Lowman, Nakhane Toure, Oskido, Danny K, DJ Kent, Donald, the Parlotones, Shortstraw and Uhuru.

Comedian Trevor Noah and Oscar-winning Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave) are among the nominees for personality of the year.

Tickets for the Mamas start at R200 and can booked at Computicket and Shoprite and Checkers stores.
