House fire: 14 residents lose everything

2013-03-20 00:00

FOURTEEN people were left homeless and with nothing when a fire gutted their home on Prince Alfred Street last night.

One of them, a taxi driver, told The Witness that some of the items that were destroyed in the fire that started before 8 pm were his ID, driver’s licence and the keys to his taxi.

“Everything’s gone. Right now, all we have are the clothes on our back.

Luckily no one was injured in the fire,” said Nhlanhla Dube.

He said their blankets were also lost in the fire, and as a light drizzle was falling over their home, he said they did not know where they would sleep.

“All of the money I made from my taxi trips today was also destroyed.

“I have no phone, so I have no way of contacting my boss in the morning to tell him that it’s gone.”

Another man who lived in the house said he was in the outhouse when he saw smoke coming from inside.

“I tried to rush inside, but I couldn’t get in,” he said.

He too said his ID was one of the items that was destroyed.

A firefighter on the scene told The Witness: “We pulled out two gas cylinders, but we will have to investigate as to how [the fire] started.”

As for the house’s occupants, he said all of them were accounted for.

Dube said two police officers also reported to the scene, but left soon after it was under control.
