Housing: Newcastle accredited to run its own show

2012-08-16 00:00

NEWCASTLE is the only secondary city in the province to receive a level two accreditation at the National Department of Human Settlement’s Minister and MEC’s meeting held in Potchefstroom recently.

Only Durban Metro has such accredition in KwaZulu-Natal.

Newcastle Mayor Afzul Rehman was in attendance to receive the accreditation.

Rehman told reporters that level two accreditation means that Newcastle will no longer have to go through the lengthy process of applying for housing funding from the province.

Instead, Newcastle Municipality will now plan, budget and execute all of its own housing projects and will source funding directly from the National Department of Human Settlements.

Rehman said the municipality had undergone an intense assessment process in which the municipality’s capability to deal with massive projects had been scrutinised along with its ability to deal with the large sums of money that housing projects entailed.

The finance department had received a microscopic evaluation before a final decision had been taken.

Having impressed at a national level and owing to the successful accreditation, Newcastle has also secured a seat at MinMec meetings.

Rehman will join national Minister for Human Settlements Tokyo Sexwale and Provincial MECs and be a part of the decision-making process on how the national budget is spent.
