How many good men are out there?

2007-11-30 00:00

Contrary to many of the articles that we read in newspapers, which tell of the horrors of gender based violence in this province and this country, there are in fact many men who are not abusers.

This year, during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, we want to hear some positive stories for a change. We want to hear about the many amazing things ordinary men in our province are doing to bring about healing and hope; those who are working to bring about more life-giving relationships in families and society, and equality for all people. They might just be doing it in the way they live their own lives: overcoming adversity or finding ways to help others. They might be actively involved in initiatives that make a difference to women, children, youth, or the sick.

To make this happen a partnership of organisations put together a competition inviting stories fitting this theme. The Witness will be running the best 16 stories submitted – one on each of the 16 days of the campaign, from November 25 to December 10. One finalist will win a special prize — a weekend away with his or her partner.

• Issued by a Partnership of ecumenical organisations working on gender issues in KwaZulu-Natal: the Pietermaritzburg Agency for Christian Social Awareness; the KZN Christian Council, Pietermaritzburg; the KwaZulu Regional Christian Council, Eshowe; and the Thukela Amajuba Mzinyathi Christian Council, Ladysmith.
