A CARDINAL rule of protecting your private information online is to always remember your passwords. Keep passwords simple enough for you to remember, but complex enough that no one will be able to guess them.

Make use of a password keeper app. Many are available at the Google Play Store, iTunes for iOS and others for Nokia, BlackBerry and other devices. Popular apps for Android and iOS are Keeper Password Manager and Universal Password Manager.

Never s hop online at a public place such as an Internet cafe or shared computer at an office or university, even if you have your own login . If it is absolutely necessary, browse in private mode. Private browsing can be accessed through most browsers, by opening up the menu or file button, then selecting the private browsing mode. For Internet Explorer and Firefox the shortcut keys are: Clt + Shift + P and for Google Chrome’s Incognito Mode: Clt + Shift + N. Private browsing will not make you invisible on the Internet and won’t protect you from websites that collect and share information about you. It will also not save your browsing history on the computer you use. Private browsing also doesn’t protect you from keyloggers or spyware that may be installed on the computer.

I nvest in Internet security . Products and apps can be downloaded from various app stores. Recently, Kaspersky Lab launched the Kaspersky Internet Security multi-device package. Products such as these use a single licence to protect all your devices from viruses and spyware in real time. They also provide protection for online banking and shopping as well as keeping children safe on the Internet. Many of the products can be purchased from most computer stores from around R 299 and upwards.

And finally, make sure the site you shop from is legitimate.
