Howick Museum: find out more at public

2012-05-08 00:00

TWO special public discussion sessions have been arranged to allow residents to find out more about the Howick

Local History Museum and how they can help to ensure it remains functioning and viable.

The meetings will take place in the council chamber of the uMngeni municipal offices, corner of Somme and Dicks streets, today at 2 pm and on Thursday at 5 pm.

The museum is a public institution and long-term planning and policy development is a consultative process in line with regulations and generally accepted standards, a spokesperson for the council said.

“The dynamic role of the public as stakeholders will be discussed in relation to the call to be published shortly for nominations to the advisory committee, which is responsible for museum governance, and the benefits of ‘friends of the museum’ will be explained,” the spokesperson said.

The museum first opened its doors 20 years ago. It was repositioned at Goddard Park and the Howick Falls to add to the heritage resources in the area, and since then statistics have shown an increase in visitor numbers. The monthly average of visitors to the museum between April 2011 and March 2012 was 555.
