Howick family bear cops’ wrath

2014-09-23 00:00

A GRADE 12 pupil, from Howick, Deelan Jackpersad (18) described yesterday how his family was tormented at the hands of the police on Saturday, September 13.

He said three men forced their way into their house, piercing the door with a sharp spear-like object. “It was then we realised we were in trouble.”

He said when the police arrived, three of them kicked their door open and aimed their guns at them. “Two of them were not in uniform and so we could not recognise them as police officers.”

He said the police threatened to shoot them so they all surrendered and the men without uniforms started attacking him with a baton.

“They kicked my mom in her stomach,” he said, adding they sprayed teargas into their eyes and beat them.

Jackpersad said he tried to help his mother. “They shoved me and I fell. Then I saw these officers booting and beating my 14-year-old brother on the floor and dragging him towards the police van”.

Jackpersad said when he asked them to leave him as he was a minor, an officer in uniform began to hit him. He was later rushed to Howick private hospital.

“My brother had spent the whole night in jail together with my parents.”

It is alleged that the reason for the gruesome attack was an act of revenge after one of the policemen’s relatives was allegedly stabbed by one of Jackpersad’s family members.

IPID spokesperson, Moses Dlamini said they would investigate the matter.
