Howick museum: Meeting to launch friends organisation

2012-06-01 00:00

IN a bid to boost their museum, Howick residents are holding a meeting to launch The Friends of the Howick Museum at 5 pm today at the Dave Mayo Centre at Howick High School.

“There is a great need for this,” said Marie Lourens, convenor of the meeting.

“Funding has been cut to all museums and art galleries, dramatically.

“We need a strong organisation to support the museum in various areas, though we are not intending to fund it.”

The museum is funded by the uMngeni Municipality.

Curator Claire Adderley welcomed the formation of a friends organisation, saying: “It’s a very positive thing.

“This is a community local history museum and we call on everyone to get involved — it’s the right environment to reflect our community.”

The Howick Museum, near the Howick Falls, was last refurbished 20 years ago.

Lourens said: “The museum exhibition is static. It’s not a living museum where people can visit and see something new each time. This is due to lack of storage space. So that’s something to put on our wishlist.

“Nor does the museum reflect the diverse cultures of our community.”

The gardens at the museum also need attention. “They were designed by a horticulturalist but, now they are overgrown with weeds. At the moment there is nothing that draws you to the museum,” added Lourens.

At the meeting, William Hyslop will give a short history of the museum, Elwyn Jenkins will provide input on practical implementation, and Lourens will outline a draft constitution.

The meeting will be an informal affair designed to chart a way forward with the idea of holding a formal AGM in about six months time.

Attendees will be asked to indicate areas in which they would be prepared to become involved in, such as fundraising, preparation of displays, maintenance and publicity.
